FOURTH YEAR STUDIO  |  Marvin Windows Competition

This is a nature retreat located in Bluestem Prairie Scientific Natural Area, which is 15 miles east of Moorhead, Minnesota. The program allows for 20 guests. The utilization of Marvin Windows helps make this the perfect place to observe nature and experience the natural environment.

FOURTH YEAR STUDIO  |  High-Rise Studio   |   a sustainable vertical community in San Francisco, CA

Mission Tower is a mixed-use "vertical community" my partner and I designed in the high-rise studio. After visiting San Francisco, we continued to research and analyze the culture and the city. We found the area to be very environmentally conscious, so we made an effort to incorporate sustainable architectural features. Bamboo gardens flow through the double-skinned structure and are showcased within three large public atriums.

THIRD YEAR STUDIO  |  linking existing pathways

As an addition to Fargo's skyway system, this rooftop lounge space is partially indoors and partially outdoors. Transparent concrete was used to blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The structure is an extension off of the existing hallway and parking ramp- even the colors. The structure can be seen from the street level, which may create interest and lure people into the skyway system.

THIRD YEAR STUDIO  |  structure & detailing

The Recreation Center for Youth, designed for Duluth, Minnesota, consists of a series of buildings that support activities for the mind, body, and soul. The heart of the design exists in the center, where the tubular passageways that reach out to the buildings come together. These passageways were my first experience with detailing.

THIRD YEAR STUDIO  |  structure & materials

Fort Abercrombie Museum was the first project I designed with some beginners structural and materials knowledge. It is on a historic site located near Abercrombie, Minnesota.

The wood structure became a driving force in my design. Like trees in a forest, the bracing has the wood branching out at various heights.

SECOND YEAR STUDIO  |  putting together a presentation

My first experience designing a floorplan and a set of presentation drawings was in the design of a library for a site in Moorhead, Minnesota.

I drew freehand using ink as a medium. - using line weights and hatching techniques to create form,. This gave each drawing unique character.

This library was my first massing model. It was quite challenging to assemble because of all of the curves in my design.

SECOND YEAR STUDIO  |  experimenting with building form

Although structure is not taught until third year, we were given the opportunity to explore it in one of our designs. I created a basswood model of how I thought the structure would go together.

At this time, I had no knowledge of how to use or access design software. The plan, an elevation, and a perspective, were drawn freehand.

FIRST YEAR STUDIO  |  learning basic design principles

I learned basic design principles and basic drawing skills through various sketchbook assignments.

By identifying design principles in buildings around the area, it became easier to understand how they are applied to design and architecture.

Drawing became, and still is, a helpful tool in my understanding of architecture.
